It’s Preseason – Practice Your Fundamentals!

Tomorrow is the inaugural “live and in person” meeting of the Big Love Spiritual Community (we wish all of you could be there — please join us in spirit, if you cannot attend physically).

As we’ve been preparing for that, the words that kept coming into our consciousness revolved around the theme of returning to center and living according to Spirit’s guidance. This is a most basic concept of how to“live more Spiritfully every day, in every way.”

It begins with the Truth that we are spiritual beings, having a human experience. We find our point of connection in the center within – our direct link to and with Spirit. Therefore, to live spiritually and spiritfully, I must live from the inside out, allowing Spirit to express fully through us. When we do that, we are “in the flow”.

If Spirit held preseason training camp like the NFL is wrapping up now, this would be a key part of the basic training fundamentals. It would be stressed in the same that the late, great NFL coach Vince Lombardi emphasized “blocking and tackling”.

Many of us might react adversely if we were thought to be “fundamentalists”. But, Jesus taught fundamentals all the time. For instance when Jesus told his followers: “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and all these things will be added unto you.” he was reminding them that as they went, they’d discover what is theirs to do — and that their good would then flows easily to them.
The same holds true for us in our own lives.

Of course, that teaching might work well for us as we quiet ourselves in a morning meditation. But then, when we start interfacing with the “real world”, how well do we stay centered in that idea? Or, instead, do we find ourselves responding and reacting to external circumstances in a more “worldly” way — perhaps striving to accomplish or “get” what we think we want by will-power and brutish force?

We hate to admit it, but it is easy to fall off the spiritual wagon, abandoning fundamentals and trying to finesse things. To avoid doing that (and to stay centered in Spirit), it is useful to have reminders. Quotations from spiritual masters are often helpful. Here’s one by Jeanne Pierre de Caussade that reinforces today’s theme:

We must offer ourselves to God like a clean, smooth canvas
and not worry ourselves about what God may choose to paint
on it, but at each moment, feel only the stroke of His brush

M. de Caussade (1675 – 1751) was an 18th century French Jesuit priest who passionately encouraged people to live fully in the present moment. He believed that in accepting and understanding the current moment, we discover Spirit’s presence and Spirit’s purpose for us. Note that this is not a passive process. M. de Caussade says that we must offer ourselves – consciously choose to be the canvas on which God paints.

Mother Theresa proffered a similar idea when she said, “I am but a pencil in the hand of God, writing love letters to the world.

Whether we see ourselves as a canvas or a pencil, the idea is the same. We remember that when we are in the flow, it is not we, but Spirit within that does the work. There we go again — paraphrasing another fundamental teaching. Whether it’s the NFL or the game of life, remembering and using fundamentals is essential! And that’s the way it is.

It’s Your Turn!

Coach Lombardi stressed the importance of fundamental and practice so that his players responded virtually automatically under game conditions. The same is true about our spiritual experience in day to day life. When we do our “practices”, it’s much easier to respond appropriately in times to stress.

What “Spiritful fundamentals” do you practice regularly?

If you’re willing, please share your responses in the comment section under this blogpost as it appears on the Big Love Community Facebook page.
