Is It The DT’s – Or “The Calm Before The Storm”?
delirium tremens (trē’mənz) n. [Abbr. DT ] –
An acute, sometimes fatal episode of delirium …
that is characterized by sweating, trembling, anxiety, confusion, and hallucinations.
The “DT’s” are usually associated with the withdrawal from excess and abusive use of alcohol. As we understand the DT’s, people suffering from them are essentially totally dysfunctional — physically, mentally, emotionally, socially, and spiritually. Basically, they are “out of action” — down for the count — until they pass.
At the risk of being “politically incorrect”, it appears that a new type of DT’s have emerged. Not one associated (at least directly) with alcohol. The condition seems to be much more cultural and societal phenomenon — seemingly linked directly to the person currently occupying the American White House’s Oval Office. That person (setting aside the middle “J” ) has, of course, the initials “DT”.
The views expressed here are solely the opinions of the authors and are not intended as either an endorsement or disparagement of DT. Instead, what we’re “reporting” is our observation or perception or experience of what’s going on in the country. And, we suspect or suggest it is specifically a reaction to the DT Presidency.
What we’re witnessing is a sort of disengagement of people (including, admittedly, in ourselves as well) with life on a day-to-day basis. There seems to be a lack of enthusiasm. We don’t see people as ready to step up and get excited about trying new things.
If alcohol’s DT’s are characterized by “sweating, trembling, anxiety, confusion, and hallucinations”, today’s cultural DT’s are marked by indifference, discouragement, uncertainty, disbelief, and a certain sense of “dread” (of what might be coming next?). It’s as if people are simply worn down, exhausted by all of the drama (immigration, health care, climate change, civil rights abuse, mass shootings, North Korea/Iran/Russian meddling, cancellation of birth control coverage, and Tweets ad nauseum….etc., etc.).
If anything is happening, it seems to be in slow-motion with many instant replays (“…deja-vu all over again”….????) — different day and subject but the same-old, same-old routine. But, for the most part, life has a feeling of being on hold. There seems to be almost no appetite for taking on anything new …. not even “tire-kicking”….
As we’ve launched Big Love as a real, live community here in San Diego, we feel like we’ve encountered it first hand. We’ve formed two “Meetup” groups with an aggregate combined membership of almost 100 people.
But, having “signed up” almost no-one is taking the next step of actually attending a gathering. Perhaps we’ve got subject-matter, day-and-time-or-place, or presentation problems. We’re willing to own those. But our suspicion is that the lack of in-person response might be more indicative of the low-energy present in America today. It’s a manifestation of the “DT’s”.
It could be similar to the Kubler-Ross grieving model. You know — the response to a death (of whatever form) has four stages: (1) Denial, (2) Anger, (3) Reconciliation, and (4) Acceptance. At the risk of generalizing, it seems that those who experienced a “death” on 11/8/16 (Election Day) have pretty much gone through states (1) and (2).
It could be that “Stage 3” may be manifesting as a sort of “Deer-in-the-Headlights” profile of what we’re calling “The DT’s” — of being dazed and confused. We hope it is not actually “Stage 4” behavior (i.e. “Acceptance”).
In a White House ceremony last week, DT mumbled a suggestion that “…perhaps this is the calm before the storm.” He refused to elaborate.
Since he didn’t, allow us to do so. We’re hoping that “The DT’s” represent a time when people are gathering themselves, marshaling their energies, their resources, and their spirit to get back on track again and reclaim their Spirit-given power to bring forth what is good and true.
Could it be the case that “Stage 4 — Acceptance” is going to be the time when passions for the positive re-emerge, when we come together to claim the good we deserve? We hope so. And we’re here to help in any way we can. Let us know how we can support you — and what you’re willing to do to lead the way…..
Be Calm — And, By All Means, Carry On!

What’s your experience of daily living today? Are you feeling energized — on fire about life? Or, do you have that “DT’s” feeling? Do you feel like it is “The Calm Before The Storm”? Whether or not you have either, what are your ideas about how to deal with them?
If you’re willing, please share your responses in the comment section under this blogpost as it appears on the Big Love Community Facebook page.
We’ve decided to put our “real, live” community “on-hold” for the moment. Our thought is to regroup and explore other options for engaging people that gets a greater response. Any ideas or suggestions? We’d welcome them!If there are topics you’d like us to address, please send us an email from our “Contact Us” web page.
